• Not washing you face before bed

Leaving dirt, sweat, dust, bacteria and make-up on when you go to bed will irritate your skin and lead to enlarged pores, acne and red spots. Be sure to clean with appropriate products, do not use harsh commercial soaps. Keep no-rinse face wipes next to your bed for those times when you forget or don’t have time to wash properly.


  • Not using SPF protection

Harmful UVA rays from sunlight will age our skin all year round, not just in the summer, even when clody there are still UV rays, and UVA rays also penetrate through glass, so you are not safe indoors if you are near a window. Using an everyday moisturiser with SPF protection will help prevent this. Many natural oils have SPF protection including Carrot Seed oil, Avocado oil, Coconut oil, Olive oil, Macadamia oil, Almond oil and Jojoba oil.   • Exfoliating too much

Although gentle exfoliating is important, abusing exfoliation products and excessive exfoliating in general will lead to premature aging of skin. If you have normal to oily skin, you can exfoliate a max two times a week, whereas if you have dry skin you should not exfoliate more than once a week.


  • Using creams with harmful chemicals

Most commercial cosmetic products contain harmful chemicals and preservatives such as parabens, phthalates, dioxin, triciosan, amines and other dangerous chemicals that not only are harmful and irritant to the skin, but also toxic to our bodies in general.


  • Commercial anti-aging products

Did you know that commercial anti-aging products can be quite aggressive? Some of them can actually have the opposite effect causing inflammation which accelerates fine lines, brown spots and sagging. They may have short term benefits, but being laden with harsh ingredients, when used over time, can cause more harm than good.


  • Avoiding natural oils

Many people avoid using oils or products containing oils because they don’t want oily skin, however, natural oils such as olive, coconut, avocado and many others have amazing anti-aging properties that help fight sun damage, inflammation, reduce lines and return youthful looking skin.


  • Wearing makeup all the time

Make up can cause dryness, clog pores and lead to acne, which can make your skin look older. To combat this, go makeup free as often as you can, and have at least 1 day a week without make up so that your skin can breathe and rebalance itself.


  • Ignoring your hands and neck

Often the hands are actually the first to show signs of aging, before the face, it is important to cleanse, moisturise and apply sunscreen on your hands and neck as well.


  • Not getting enough sleep

This one is very important, if you don’t get enough sleep, you will age yourself and look older, especially around the eyes. Use a night cream before going to bed so that you can wake up with healthy skin.


  • Bad lifestyle choices

Last but certainly not least, above all else, the number one mistake you can make that will make you look older is poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and excessive drinking. No amount of anti-aging creams and moisturisers are going to help you if you don’t eat well, get some form of exercise, and avoid smoking and regular drinking. Consuming excessive amounts of sugar will also wreak havoc on your skin.
